Now more than ever, companies, regardless of industry, product or services are taking a deeper look at their Workforce Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, and that is great news!
Then why is it that lack of diverse tech talent remains an ongoing problem?
Let’s think about it. We live in a country where 57% of its workforce is made up of women, yet only 26% of technology-related positions are held by women; and only 4% of the Black, Latina and Native American women have roles in the computing workforce and almost none are Senior Leadership.
These numbers show that the problem really isn’t about a shortage of talented, diverse people. Then perhaps the problem is that many employers are simply not using the right strategies to find, retain and grow the talent.
Pyramid hosted “The C-Suite Strategy to Win the War for Diverse Tech Talent” during the 2019 National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) conference, and what we heard on the panel is that there is more to diversity than gender and race. It’s about making space at the table for people from all walks of life and ensuring that everyone feels welcomed (inspired even) to participate.
But achieving true inclusion and diversity still eludes many business.
Why?
We believe that many employers are simply not using the right strategies to find and grow the talent and that unless technology leaders make it their priority to build more diverse talent pools, we risk losing all the progress we have made towards equality.
We know that building a diverse workplace is challenging. It requires hiring teams to broaden talent pools and rethink strategies they have relied on for years. It means being challenged by different perspectives and approaches to problem-solving.
